Changing Sounds

                  Different Styles & Genres

Live Band

Since 2023 we have been rehearsing, composing and performing with this core group of wonderful musicians, but we are open to all kinds of collaborations to expand the variety of styles and genres with other artists.

The live band is a colorful mix of people from different cultural and musical backgrounds: Brenda on guitar and vocals, Sarah on bass, Lina on keys and vocals, Berat on saxophone and clarinet, and Lavya on drums and tablas.

Music

The project started in 2019 when Lina wanted to record and play her compositions. Since then, supported by friends and inspiring musicians, some of her songs have been recorded, played live and new songs were created.
In this process many people contributed their ideas and style and it is exciting to see how a song idea evolves in this way.
Did you know that every song has a unique story to tell? If you want to know about the inspiration behind the song, click on “Stories & Sheets”.

Don’t expect one song to sound like another… there are some changing sounds. 😉

#1: Better Days

Better Days is the result of my first painful heartbreak.
I was so in love, but he didn’t love me, what a shame!
So I tried to work out my feelings sitting at the piano. I had the chords and wrote the choral lyrics.”I’m waiting for better days, cause all I do is thinking about you. I feel ashamed, because I know, you’re not in love at all!”

At that time I was still in school, making music with my dear friend Kati, who is my sister of heart. Because I’m an only child and so are my mom and dad, I think of some of my friends as my brothers and sisters. Anyway, Kati sang a lot and had a hard time at home. We combined her lyrics with mine and both hoped for better days…. And they came 😉

#2: Can We Change

Can we change? Can I change? Can we change as a society, as a world?
Frustrated by feeling trapped in my own habits and behaviors, not changing and repeating the same arguments and patterns, I ask myself: Can I change? Or do I need to leave and need new input?

This question was on my mind when Gandolfo, the bass player, expressed the desire to try different rhythms. So it became a 7/4 time, which is not my habit and I had to change to be able to play the piece 😉 Yes, we can change, but it is not so easy.

What kind of change in the world and in yourself do you long for?

#3: Feel At Home

Intro:
“Our minefield of expectations and fears can no longer be our home. Afraid of saying the wrong thing we just stay silent.
Home is where we can be the way we are, where I can be the way I am, with respect and without fear.
I want to feel warm and secure. I want to feel at home. I want you to feel at home too, I want to feel at home, right here and right now.”

Do you feel me?
The song was born from the emotion of no longer feeling at home where my home was.  I wish you and us a home that also feels like home.

#1: Le Son Des Trois

“Le Son Des Trois” means in English the sound of three. I chose a French title because it is the language of love and romance and therefore fits the song well.
It’s a homage to the energy of three people inspiring each other and having a wonderful time. With ease, everything came together and was in the flow.
This romantic dream was soon overshadowed by a dark cloud of jealousy. Being respectful to each other and not hurting each other’s feelings was too much of a challenge.

With this song I tried to process the melancholy and sadness about the loss of this shared energy and love. I am still very grateful for the time we had together but also very sad that it didn’t last.

#2: Two And THe Wind

“Two and the Wind” was inspired by a conversation about numbers, rhythm and music. When I asked what your favorite number is, I got the answer “Two”, but 12 is also a very interesting number. A 12 rhythm can be divided into 2, 3, 4, 6.

The song roughly contains only two chords and is in a 12 rhythm that switches between a 4, 3 and 6 feeling. A meditative and experimental piece in which you can immerse yourself.
The song becomes hypnotic and the rhythms intertwine. The EP version was significantly co-designed by Marc who has incorporated influences from drum and bass.

A transient moment, a meeting of two people that the wind blows apart again, but the inspiration remains.

#3: Pain is temporary

Feel the pain!

We want to avoid pain and fight against it. But it is part of life and usually passes more quickly and is more bearable if we welcome it. The pain will pass. We can hold on to this belief.
The dissonant chord at the beginning is meant to express the feeling of pain. Within the piece there are always phases of tension and relaxation. At the end, the pain dissolves harmonically.

I made the song slower afterwards, so that one has more time to feel.
The piano sheet is in the original key. The pitch also droped by making the song slower.

#1: Moving On

Life means constant change. Let’s go, you can’t just stop time. Standstill and stagnation are the enemies of vitality, you have to move forward even if you stumble.
The song has very different parts: Some are playful and lively, others more calm and relaxed.  In our life there are also different episodes and we have to find a good balance between tension and relaxation.

Moving On was born from the fusion of two ideas.
Lukas, who used to play mainly metal on drums, came to me with an idea for a beat. I had composed a melody on the piano that I didn’t know what to do with yet. So we stirred the two together and Finn and Alfred spiced it up with saxophone and bass. The result: A strange piece 🙂

#1: Lullaby

This lullaby is meant to soothe and give beautiful dreams. The song is influenced by my many years in church choirs. Originally, the song was to be sung by a choir a capella…. perhaps one day that will happen. I dedicate the song to my mother and hope it will help her sleep better.
Its effectiveness has already been tested on babies, all of whom fell asleep very well 🙂

I transposed the song to the tuning of 432 Hz (for an A). This is supposed to be particularly healing and my subjective feeling agreed with it…

Good night and sweet dreams!

#1: Lost Song

“Sometimes I sit down at the piano and a melody develops from an idea or a feeling, just trying out tones and chords.
Then I have to make notes and record it, otherwise the idea gets lost again.

I had the idea for Lost Song in 2006 and luckily I made some notes (that probably only I can understand… see picture on the right).
Then in about 2019 I happened to find my weirdly notated notes again and tried to remember…

With the help of Gandolfo, who plays the bass, we finished composing the song and then recorded it. My father (Sulo) plays soprano saxophone and Julian plays drums. Together with Marc I worked on the song for quite a long time…. it became pretty bassy for a rather jazzy song. That’s what you get when you work with a producer who actually makes drum and bass.😉

#1: Popo Genguin
Popo Genguin was inspired by the fabolous trio Gogo Penguin.
I tried to make a song in theire style and sound and I must confess that I wasn’t successfull. But anyway I like the song which came out of this trial.

#2: Moving On

Life means constant change. Let’s go, you can’t just stop time. Standstill and stagnation are the enemies of vitality, you have to move forward even if you stumble.
Try to find the balance between tension and relaxation. Dance through life with playful ease.

Moving On was born from the fusion of two ideas.
Lukas, who used to play mainly metal on the drums, came to me with the idea for the beat. I had composed a melody on the piano that I didn’t know what to do with yet. So we stirred the two together and about 5 other people spiced it up. Outcome: A peculiar piece 🙂

On the recording Finn plays the melody in the swing part with soprano sax.

#3: Lost Song

I first had the idea for this song when I was about 18 years old. My piano teacher showed me Keith Jarrett and I was inspired by the different colors of sound and chords he used. I tried to play chords and harmonies in a similar direction. Playing around, I found a melody and made some lazy notes on a piece of paper (see at the right).

Then, after 13 years, I had completely forgotten that the song ever existed, I found my piece of paper and tried to remember… It took some time. With bassist Gandolfo, I rearranged the song that had been lost for so long 😉 My father played the sax (it is his favorite song now) and with Julian we recorded the drums at the AMV Arion Aachen.

satisfied when you realize you really like the song now. 🙂
